Chapter 1
Defiled by the Island Warrior
“There it is—your new home.”
The captain points toward the horizon. Rough waves rock the boat beneath us, nearly sending me off the edge. We’re atop crystal-clear waters, the sun raining down and reflecting off the sapphire surface. In the distance, a lush, vibrant mass of greenery protrudes from the ocean, standing tall and proud.
He’s right. Last month, I finished my doctoral degree in anthropology. This trip is the culmination of all my hard work. I’ve received a rare opportunity to live amongst an isolated tribe, learning their ways and documenting my findings.
“It’s beautiful.” I raise a hand to shield my eyes from the sun.
“It’s unusual for us to sail out here—the islanders don’t welcome outsiders. There’s no modern technology on the island,” the captain says.
“Yeah. I’ll have to leave everything behind. I still can’t believe they’re letting me in. My university had to negotiate for months to make this happen.”
“Well, enjoy yourself.” The captain lets out a hearty laugh. “Personally, I’m not too fond of them. They’re a rough and aggressive people. Don’t upset them.”
He slaps me on the back and returns to the wheel. I stay at the edge of the boat, gazing up at the towering mountain jutting from the island’s center. The steep brown cliffs lead up to a gaping crater at the top. A light mist of smoke wafts from the hole…it’s an active volcano. As I understand it, the people here view it with spiritual reverence. There’s a sort of mystic lore surrounding the mountain, and it’s a goal of mine to learn more.
And of course, I’ll also be hitting the beach.
Down beneath the craggy cliffs, a lush jungle leads to pristine white beaches. At first glance, I’d assume this place was an island resort…but the lack of people on the beach says otherwise. This is true isolation. Once this boat leaves, it’ll just be me and the islanders for the next month.
The boat engine hums as we approach the shore. Palm trees line the beach, their long fronds casting eerie, spider-like shadows atop the sand. Where is everyone? The place is deserted.
“Alright—off you go!” The captain stops the boat near the shore. “I’ll be back in a month to pick you up. Try not to get into any trouble.”
“Thank you, sir.” I give a warm smile before grabbing my bag and leaping into the shallow water.
I slosh toward the beach, holding my possessions high. All I’ve been allowed to bring are clothes, a pen, and a notebook. This is gonna be a wild experience—I can feel it.
Stepping onto the beach, I realize how serene the island is. All I can hear are the waves and the rustling of palms swaying high above. Their leaves seem to be whispering forbidden, ancient secrets…
But as I stand here, islanders begin emerging from the shadows. Stepping forth from the shrubs and tropical wildflowers, they eye me with curiosity. They’re all men with dark skin and vibrant black hair—I suppose the women are all back at camp.
A strange feeling washes over me as they approach. Wearing nothing but small grass skirts, necklaces, and bracelets, they tower over me. These men are massive. Thick, striated bands of muscle sit atop their shoulders, stretching down toward pronounced biceps and shredded forearms. Their skin is radiant and smooth. Their brown eyes are large and bright.
And their hair…
Cropped just above their eyes, they all sport shaggy manes of lustrous, velvety black hair. The locks glimmer like obsidian in the sunlight. Combined with their sharp, masculine faces, the overall aesthetic is sleek and fierce.
“H-hello…” I give an awkward wave.
In the past, small delegations from my university have taught many of the locals English…or so I’ve been told.
“Welcome!” An elderly man emerges from the jungle.
He shuffles over the sand toward me, accompanied by a young man holding a spear and a coconut that’s been cut in half.
“You must be the village elder!” I give a cheerful smile.
“Yes…yes…” He gestures toward the man by his side. “A gift!”
The young warrior extends the coconut toward me. Our fingers lightly brush as I accept the gift. His skin is hot and fiery…like the magma in the volcano above us. He looks down at me with glittering brown eyes and smirks. This isn’t a friendly smile…no, it almost looks like he’s mocking me.
And why wouldn’t he?
I’m fit and athletic, but he’s on a completely different level. My eyes trace down his mountainous traps toward his full, heavy pecs. Large, dark nipples adorn the frightening bulges. It’s odd, but my eyes seem drawn to the shapes…something about them pulls me in. His chest…it exudes an aura of dominance.
And those perfectly symmetrical abs…
And the bulge protruding from his grass skirt…
“Welcome to our home.” His deep, gravelly voice jolts me from my strange thoughts. “What is your name?”
“C-Cooper!” My cheeks flush while I look back up toward his face.
“Coopeh?”
“No, Cooper.”
“Coopah?”
“No—coo-purr.”
“Ah, Cooper.”
“Yes, exactly!” My eyes light up with excitement.
“My name is Kael. I’ll be your guide. The other men don’t speak much of your language.”
“I see…thank you!”
He nods and motions for me to follow into the jungle. Flanked by tribesmen, I step into the shadows. The soothing ocean rhythm morphs into an ominous jungle symphony. Rustles, croaks, hisses…this place is filled with life, but it’s all hidden from view.
Sweat pours down my skin as we progress, but my guides seem unfazed. The dense jungle canopy shields us from the sun, but it does little to calm the sweltering tropical heat. The tank top I’m wearing is already drenched and sticking to my skin…
But we finally arrive.
